Scott Adams: Brilliant

In a recent post to the Dilbert Blog, Scott Adams brings up a little bit of hope for those of us depressed by the current administration.

My favorite conspiracy theory is the one that says the world is being run by a handful of ultra-rich capitalists, and that our elected governments are mere puppets. I sure hope it’s true. Otherwise my survival depends on hordes of clueless goobers electing competent leaders. That’s about as likely as a dog pissing the Mona Lisa into a snow bank.

The only way I can get to sleep at night is by imagining a secret cabal of highly competent puppetmasters who are handling the important decisions while our elected politicians debate flag burning and the definition of marriage.

It’s the only explanation for how the governments of the world could be staffed with morons and yet everything still runs okay, sort of. Granted, things aren’t perfect, but when you hear our leaders talk, you have to wonder why our energy policy doesn’t involve burning asbestos on playgrounds. There must be some competent people pulling the strings behind the curtain, adjusting the money supply, twiddling with interest rates, choosing the winners for American Idol, and that sort of thing.

Long live the secret cabal! It's gotta be better than what we are told is really going on in gubmint!

Novell Public Service Announcement

What they don't mention in this is that the move was from Novell to Windows last time around, and now from Windows to Linux.

Inconceivable!

I'm a big fan of The Princess Bride. Not what I would call an extremely popular movie, but one of my favorites. I was surprised to see this story with Inigo's line taking the #1 spot for the best movie lines ever. Then I was even more surprised when I looked to see that the top 4 were all from The Princess Bride.

1. "Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die." --Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin) in "The Princess Bride"

2. "Inconceivable!" "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."
--Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin) in "The Princess Bride"

3. "Have fun storming the castle."
--Miracle Max (Bill Crystal) in "The Princess Bride"

4. "As you wish."
--Westley (Cary Elwes) in "The Princess Bride"

5. "I'll have what she's having."
--Female diner (Estelle Reiner) in "When Harry Met Sally"

6. "You had me at hello."
--Dorothy Boyd (ReneHeaderssten your seat belts--It's going to be a bumpy night."
--Margo Channing (Bette Davis) in "All About Eve"

8. "You know how to whistle, don't you, Steve? You just put your lips together...and blow."
--Marie Browning (Lauren Bacall) in "To Have and Have Not"

9. "If I'd been a ranch, they would've named me Bar Nothin'."
--Gilda (Rita Hayworth) in "Gilda"

10. "Veda's convinced me that alligators have the right idea: They eat their young."
--Ida Corwin (Eve Arden) in "Mildred Pierce"

This Land... fair use goodness from JibJab

I'm a fan of Arlo Guthrie (much to the dismay of my wife) and his dad, Woody, created many well-known folk songs. Parody is one of the most widely recognized fair-use rights under Copyright law, but the group that now owns the copyrights to Woody Guthrie's music is attacking JibJab for this parody they did.

Anyhow, this is hilarious no matter which side of the political fence you sit on.

Vending machines a-go-go

I've seen some of the wacky vending machines that they have in Japan on other sites, but this is nuts. Farm fresh eggs? Fishing line and bait? 2L bottles of beer? Wild.

Join the party party, yea buddy. Now I know you have all heard these things, a speech remixed into a dance track. This one is pretty good, not safe for work however.
